Meet the Maker

Paul Newson · Suffolk, England

I'm Paul, the art director behind InkSmithery. I build the design system, direct the aesthetic, and curate every piece that lands in the shop — bold, geometric artwork inspired by mid-century modern design, with clean lines, warm colours, and compositions that feel both retro and timeless. The design pipeline uses AI image generation under tight creative direction from me; each candidate is then reviewed, colour-matched, and either accepted or sent back. More on how AI fits into what we make.

I was born and raised in Lowestoft, on the Suffolk coast. I spent 24 years building a life and career elsewhere — good years, no complaints — but something kept pulling me eastward. I returned in my early forties and rediscovered the place with fresh eyes — the light on the water, the quiet stretches of coastline, the unhurried pace of a coastal town. Sometimes you need to go away to figure out where you belong.

InkSmithery is a UK sole trader business, owned and operated by Paul Newson from Lowestoft, Suffolk. Got a question? Drop me a line at orders@inksmithery.com or call +44 7903 950 700.

Where the Style Comes From

The mid-century modern aesthetic takes me back to my childhood — those carefree days when summers lasted forever and your only real responsibility was getting home in time for tea. The bold shapes, the earthy palettes, the optimism baked into every design from that era. There's a warmth and simplicity to it that resonates with me, and I think it resonates with other people too.

Every design I direct starts with that feeling. Whether it's a geometric landscape, a stylised monstera leaf, or an abstract cosmic scene, I want it to evoke something familiar — a sense of calm, a touch of nostalgia, a splash of colour that makes you pause for a second.

The Long Game

InkSmithery isn't a side hustle or a quick venture. It's a long-term project — a ten-year plan to build something that generates a genuine, sustainable income by the time I'm ready to step back from the day job. I work on it early in the mornings, late in the evenings, and in focused sprints at weekends. Every design uploaded, every product listed, every improvement to the shop is another small step towards that goal.

I believe in doing things properly. Each design is directed by me, generated through my pipeline, then reviewed by hand — anything that doesn't earn its place gets sent back. The products are printed by professional production partners on quality materials — Bella+Canvas cotton tees, enhanced matte art prints, gallery-wrapped canvas, ceramic mugs, soft polyester throw blankets. Nothing leaves the production line that I wouldn't be happy to receive myself.

How It Works

Everything in the shop is printed on demand. When you place an order, it goes straight to one of our production partners who print, pack, and ship it directly to your door. There's no warehouse full of stock, no bulk production runs, no waste. Each piece is made specifically for you.

Free delivery is included on every order to the UK, EU, and US. Most items arrive within 5 to 10 working days, depending on where you are in the world.

No Tracking, No Tricks

You might have noticed something different about this site — no cookie consent banner, no pop-ups asking you to subscribe before you've even seen what we sell, no third-party trackers following you around the internet. That's deliberate. I respect your attention and your privacy. You're here to look at art and maybe buy something. Everything else is a distraction.

Where to Find Us

InkSmithery designs are available here and on Redbubble, and our catalogue is carried by Pinterest Shopping as an approved merchant. Every order — wherever you place it — is fulfilled by the same professional production partners, to the same quality standards. If you prefer the range of products on Redbubble, that works; ordering direct from this site just gives us the best margin to keep doing what we do.

Curated to a Bar

Designs are generated through a pipeline I built and direct — then reviewed by hand. Only pieces that meet the bar make it into the shop. How AI fits in.
